Talking With Terry

Terry Seguin is one of the 52 percent of journalists that use Twitter to source news. The twenty first century has had a huge impact on journalism because everything is instant, I update my status when I’m brushing my teeth but people like Terry Seguin have much more interesting twitter updates, a detail of everything going on in New Brunswick hour to hour. To me this is an advantage because we get news updates for free and whenever we want, we can even get them sent to our cell phones if we wanted too. Although that same thing might be a disadvantage for journalist because we are no longer paying for newspapers or tuning in to the news hour because, well why would we, we’ve been getting updates all day for free. Terry said that people tweet him to comment on his radio show that would be another advantage for us because we can say what we want to hear or questions we wish would have been asked, this will keep Terry busy improving on questions we want to hear. At the same time every other person gets to leave their job when the day their being paid for is over but journalists now have a commitment to their listeners to answer tweets and emails about their work.
Mr. Seguin said that he had very little training before he got the job on the radio. I think that makes sense because being a journalist would be the same as being a public speaker either you got it or you don’t. Also I feel they would need training too like every job because you would need to know certain things like what is appropriate to say on the radio, or what questions need to be asked and what you can do with people who won’t answer your questions.
Radio news would have a huge advantage over TV news because you could get every question you want and need to ask asked because there isn’t as restricting time limits. Also there isn’t editing in radio news so the audience gets to hear everything that is discussed that way we always get the truth.
Mr. Seguin said something very important about his job, that being that every morning when he wakes up he is excited to go to work. Every morning I’m excited to get up and get ready for school but not so excited to go to school. It is doing makeup that I love, that’s why I choose to take a Makeup Course next year. Mr. Seguin is a very insightful man and gave good advice with interesting stories to go with.

- The story is about the 4 Muslim women who were killed by their husband and father in the name of “honor”.

2. What is the establishing shot in the video?
- The establishing shot is B-roll of a woman’s angles walking down the street while the caption “living in fear” reads across the screen.

3. What is the introduction?
- The introduction is done by a separate news caster who does not appear in the video again, he is in the studio where the rest of the video is not.

4. Most likely "sources" are used in the report and they are making comments or being quoted. Name two of them.
- Anonymous Muslim women who ran away from her family before her father could carry out her honor killing was a source, her name was not giving and her face was blurred. Raheel Raza a women activist was another source who spook on honor killings.

5. Based on what these two sources say, what questions do you think they were asked? Create two questions for each source that you feel they were probably asked.
- “What in the Muslim community make the men feel such a need for honor?” “Why do the other women involved help them?” “What could we do to stop this from happening again?”

6. Identify two different types of "B-roll" in the video.
- One b-roll I noticed was a drawn out picture of a court room with a Muslim man on the stand hypothetically done by a courtroom artist, it was videoed over and zoomed in and out on.

7. What are two other types of B-roll footage that you think they could have used (consider what is being said in the voice over’s)?
- They could have used b-roll of where the car containing the 4 women who were murder was found. Also they could have used b-roll a Muslim church

8. Identify two different voice over’s and briefly list what facts are in each voice over.
- One women who was interviewed was a friend of the middle daughter, she spoke of her personality and how nice and caring she was. Another voiceover was done by a women who runs a sort of shelter for Muslim girls who are afraid of their fathers killing them she spoke about how things need to be changed and awareness.

9. What is the closing to the video?
- The closing of the video is the newscaster who did the introduction and the newscaster who did the report on scene talking about what needs to be done to change this in the studio.

10. Who is the reporter and what is her/his tag at the end?
- At the end it ends without a tag.

An Argument Amoungst Men

Frum is very professional and always seems to remain her cool without being pushed around by Sandra Good. I think she did a great job trying her best to get answers from Good who was clearly not having it. Every time Good said “How about you start this whole thing all over” Frum did just that, she pressed her for information even though Sandra Good was more or less attaching her. I think Frums question “Do you think the attack on President Ford was justified?” Was a great question because that’s what the public wants to know and the way she worded it surprisingly got an answer? I feel if Frum had or been any more confrontational the interview would of ended must sooner because Good would have hung up.

Some things to remember when preparing questions for an interview I guess would be the mental capacity of the interviewee. Also how easily offended they are, it probably would of helped Frum out if she knew before hand that Sandra Good was off her rocker. If I were ever in an interview as disastrous as “I am a Man!” I would have probably been the one hanging up myself, because she is completely ignorant herself.

If I could interview one person it would be Elie Weisel the author of the book “Night” and a Holocaust survivor who was detained in the final year of the Holocaust in Auschwitz. I’ve seen a few interviews with him and one I remember well is with Oprah, he was friendly yet stern. I don’t think it would be a tough interview, of course it would be tough to hear his stories but he has always seemed willing to share his stories.

Absorbed In Untruths

I’ve never really considered that the news I might be reading daily could be false but a study by George Washington University and Cision found that “89% of journalists turn to blogs for research, 65% to social media sites like Facebook, 52% to Twitter, Wikipedia over 6/10 (61%) consult it.” I myself would not consider any of those resources overly reliable. After reading this article I will definitely look at news stories differently, I’ve always considered the newspaper to be a one hundred percent factual source without much thought put into it.

I was shocked by bother articles “Jimmy’s World” shocked me because I don’t understand how Janet Cook could think that the Washington area wouldn’t react to the fact that an eight year old of their community was hooked on heroin. She must have expected backlash and further questioning on her article. I could also understand that the pressure to succeed in such a fast past world as journalism over came her and pushed her to fabricate the story, still I wouldn’t consider that an excuse. I was equally shocked by the story on Stephan Harper; he is our prime minister talking trash about him in a newspaper was obviously going to cause an up roar. I think even if he had pocketed the Body of Christ it would be an inappropriate article because he was in fact at a funeral.

Journalist Jack Shafer writes “most liars make things up for the simple reason that they don't have the talent or the ability to get the story any other way.” I don’t necessarily agree with this quotation, Obviously the Editor that made the error in the Stephan Harper story and Janet Cook were talented journalist because they got the job with the Telegraph Journal and the Washington Post in the first place so they must have had some talent. I do think that universities should be doing a better job at graduating journalist who can handle the responsibility but at the same time I doubt that it was the universities fault but the fault of the environment the journalist were in and perhaps the fact that the two who made the error were not mature enough to handle the responsibility.

I think in the situation of the Harper story a ombudsman would of helped the situation greatly because it is probable that the story would have never been published. The “Jimmy’s World” story on the other hand I wonder if the error would have been picked up before it was published or until after the public started to complain. People make mistakes but I have sympathy for both journalist who lost their jobs because of a error.

This is definitely a hard news story because it is about a young boy murdering 4 women, its up-to-date and reported about as events unfold. I would also consider it hard news because it’s a crime and in the example article 'Hard News vs. Soft News' crime was a criterion for hard news.

The timing was perfect Cody Legebokoff was told that he was being charged with the death of 3 other women, aside from the one he is already in jail for murdering, on the weekend and the article was published on Monday so they hit the nail right on the head.

All though there was only 4 families affected there would be a lot of people in Prince George who were scared to go outside and travel around so everyone would be very happy to see him being served with more charges.

This is a very important article, a lot of people would care to read about a serial killer in Canada. Especially sense he is only 21 years old.

They could of included more about the murders and played the heart strings of the readers because one of the women who were murdered were blind and another was only 15 years old. I didn't walk away feeling sad because they were murdered because really I heard nothing about them.

Flectuating Population Resulting in Deaths

Due to the baby boom of 2012 the population in Canada jumped 128%, growing from 34278400 in 2011 to a whopping 43876352 in 2012 as you all know. Twelve years later we are suffering the consequences, our roads are over flooded with homeless people, and riots are breaking out. Prime minster Alex Sturgeon just passed a law that said if you have a female child, she must be sacrificed, for the sake of the population.
Histraria broke out in Toronto, feminist and prolife leaders created a nonviolent protest. Georgina Buckingham said “we seem to be reverting back into the 1940’s where women didn’t have rights which is the scariest thing I’ve ever heard of”.

As smaller cities are joining in on riots Prime Minister Sturgeon may see the mass histraria he has caused, although countries such as China have had similar laws for years. We saught a comment but he could not be reached at this time.

In Toronto there has been many deaths related to C. Defficile infections, over 20 sense late May. I think the lead of this article "TORONTO - Three more deaths have been linked to C. difficile infections in Ontario as eight hospitals continue efforts to contain outbreaks of the infection." I think this lead is relatively effective because it gets to the point but offers reassurance that hospitals are trying to contain the outbreak. "Niagara Region health officials say two patients in St. Catharine’s and one in Niagara-on-the-Lake died Thursday night." the source of the quote was the Niagara Region health officials. They do use the most interesting facts first, the fact that 20 deaths have occurred was mentioned in the first few lines, but the fact that those 20 deaths were spread out over 10 different hospitals wasn't mentioned until the end. I don't find the story has a very good ending it more or less just stops.

In Canada the inflation rate jumped 0.4 points to 3.1 per cent in August. The lead "OTTAWA - Canada's annual inflation rate jumped 0.4 points to 3.1 per cent in August as consumers paid more for gasoline, food and many other items as well." is a relativley effective lead, gets straight to the point and explains what inflation means.

Reflection Entry #1 – First Newspapers

They're are many differences between newspapers that are in publish today and the first newspapers to be published, although there are many simmilarities as well. They visually appear different in everyway other then the heading and colomns, they were no advertisments, pictures or color in the first newspaper.

Propaganda has always been in the media, it was a main aspect in World War II. There has always been a looming glass roof when it comes to the news, you can only share so much of your opinion before your stepping out of line, before they close you down, before they take away your legal rights. The goverment in my opinoin should have no say in news, no ifs ands and buts about it. Newspapers are a resource that we are intitled too, as canadian citizens we should know possitive or negative all about our government.

"Indeed it may be argued that this was the very first instance of a news blog in America." was a statment made in an argument about Publick Occurences. I agree with the statement, because really the first newspaper was more like a blog then a common newspaper. There are no advertisments, and they were often released as just one story or in other words just one "post".

Often newspapers today are critical but they know what they can be critical about and what subjects are a little more taboo. More often then not newspapers today don't critic the government in power or buisness' that often advertise in there newspaper. Its a case of not biting the hand that feeds you.

I really am not shocked that the first newspaper was published in Halifax, a lot of the "firsts" in Canada happened in the Atlantic provinces before Western Canada was so developed.
